Kingston Carnival

Why we love what we do

ABOUT US

Burrokeets UK was founded in 1990 by Joan Sam and Barbara Greaves. The name is derived from the Spanish word “Burro” meaning small donkeys used for carrying load. The band was formed with the blessings of Burrokeets in Trinidad with whom we had consultation meetings before setting up this London branch.  We were very impressed with the work Burrokeets in Trinidad were doing to help the youth and the orphans, which continues today.

OUR MOTTO IS 'SUCCESS THROUGH HARD WORK'

Throughout the years we have had the support of many people to make the band a success at various levels and will always be appreciative of their involvement.  We also thank the many masqueraders who have been with us on the road year after year and those who participated in previous years.

This year sees another exciting chapter for Burrokeets UK, with the inclusion of some younger committee members to foster the growth of the band, whilst respecting the experiences, workmanship and invaluable contribution of the original members, who have brought the band through our 25 years on the road.  We have continued strength and unity which enable us to provide an unforgettable carnival experience.

OUR CHARITABLE EFFORTS

We have utilised some of our funds to emulate the charity work of Burrokeets International in Trinidad by giving to the  Orphanage and gathering used clothing for the retirement and children’s homes in San Juan and South Trinidad. We have in the past supported “The Brass Institute” with scholarship funding for talented young musicians.

In meeting again last year with the Burrokeets International committee members, we agreed to present an annual trophy for their Youth Sports Day and in general, we plan to continue our support where and when possible to simply give back to others who are challenged in providing for themselves. Our committee of about 12 persons all volunteer their services to bring the band on the road each year with an admirable devotion to the work they do.
